The Eyes of an Angel

Our lives have been forever changed...words cannot describe how amazing the past forty-eight hours have been. We are so sorry that we have been unable to post since arriving in Will's province. Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to access our blog. Some friends have offered to update for us via e-mail. Please continue to post comments...we may not be able to read them for the next couple of days; however, they will be such an encouragement when our access is restored. We can send/receive e-mail if you would like to do so (jayhellums@juno.com or pkcjwh@juno.com). We miss you all so very much.

On to the real news...we have our precious baby boy! We flew to his province (Guangdong) on Monday morning. Due to a flight delay, we were late arriving. We were taken from the airport to our hotel for fifteen minutes, then we boarded another bus and headed to the Civil Affairs Office. Upon arriving, we were taken to the area where families meet their children. As soon as the elevator opened, we heard many babies and children crying/screaming.

I felt my eyes fill with tears...within five minutes Will was brought into the room and placed into my arms. He came willingly...he did not cry...only fussed a little later...he was so tired from the 5 - 6 hour car ride. If he has ever traveled by car, this was almost certainly the longest distance. Within a few minutes he smiled and laughed out loud.

He is a beautiful little boy. He is weak and small, for he has only been receiving formula (poor quality) with rice cereal. He can sit alone. It seems as though he has no concept of what a toy is. He prefers to look at his hands/feet. We think he weighs about sixteen pounds. One of the pictures you see is taken with a coffee cup so you can somewhat know his size...six to nine month clothing is still a little big in some outfits.

He is a happy baby...loves to laugh. At first, he made very little (if any) eye contact. By the hour we see him improving in this area. Our guide told us that due to the number of children, the bottles are propped and the nipples are cut so that the formula drains easily down the throats of the babies. He has probably had little opportunity for one on one interaction. It is obvious that the orphanage cared for him and met his basic needs - now he has the love of a family.
As we were talking, Jay said, "Paula, he is or was a true orphan." I never really understood the full impact of that term...until Monday. He came to us with the clothes he was wearing, the items we sent him for his Birthday, and a book with a picture of the orphanage and two of him...Overwhelmed? Yes, we are...to realize that we have been entrusted with this precious life. I looked at him this morning and said...why us? Why did God allow us to have such a precious one? Not realizing anyone was listening to me, Abby replied...I guess you can ask Jesus that when you get to heaven...One thing I do know...we are his and he is ours...forever !

  2. We've been waiting for this post!!!! Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Will is beautiful. You will be amazed how much he will change in the next few months with proper nutrition and love...he will flourish! Can't wait to hold and hug him! We were saying our evening prayers last night and Clark was praying for Will, it went a little something like this "help Will to get strong so he can turn 6"...hahahaha!! Out of the mouth of babes. We love you guys...tell Abby hello from Ali. Can't wait to see you at the airport on the 8th!! Just take it all in...all these wonderful memories. Everything that you have been through has been worth it...for this!

Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. Psalm 30:5
And, dear ones, your morning has come!
    Love you all,
    Rachel, T.C., Ali, and Clark

  4. He is so stinkin' adorable. When you get him home and fill him up with meat and potatoes, I'm sure he will plump up quickly.
I have posted some of these pics in the newsletter for those who don't do internet.
    Praying for all of you.

  5. Thanks goodness Sheri came over and showed me how to post a comment, I had tried several times. We are so happy for you all and know your whole life will be changed for the better. And what a blessing for Will. When I look at our two and think about what they have added to our lives, I can't help but think about what their little lives would have been like had they been left in China. Praise God!!!

  6. Poppy says “LET THE SPOILING BEGIN!”
NONA SAYS, “ I CANNOT WAIT TO GET MY ARMS AROUND OUR GRANDSON.” The photos are so precious. Yes, our lives are changing forever. God has given us another little lamb to help direct to the only firm FOUNDATION that exists. When Ali pushed her way into the world, I thought that certainly no other child in the universe could measure up to this child. Well, when Abby came into the world a bit early I thought that no other little girls could measure up to our girls. Thinking that God smiled on us with the gift of two precious girls and we were done with grands. Along comes Clark from Ukraine------BIGGER than life and SO precious-----my cup runneth over----a grandson! The miracles continued with the birth of our little (all 2lbs 4oz.) Kai . What a glorious miracle to enjoy watching our laughing, precious 22 month old little boy play. God wasn’t finished. William Addison Hellums was waiting on the other side of the world for his parents and sissy to claim him for the Hellums and Couch families. Another precious baby boy to enjoy. In a few months we will open our hearts to two more precious granddaughters. God is good. God has taught us to wait on Him. His timing is always just right. May each day be happy and filled with memories of China. Love and hugs, Poppy and Nona

  7. Hi folks,
Paula "I felt my eyes fill with tears" too, as I read your post about receiving your beautiful baby. What a precious "birth experience" for you. We are going to laugh in a few months as we compare those thin little legs of these photos with what will surely be some squeezy plump little thighs! We are all eager to see your sweet boy in person soon. Have fun and enjoy every minute.
love you much, Janise and the gang
